February’s Pick: I Feel Happy Review & Giveaway

Salina Yoon is the author to one of my son’s favorite books ever, Penguin and Pinecone.  You may recall it was our must have book in December 2012.  Well, I am happy to let you know, Yoon has many more great books for children to explore, including this month’s pick, I Feel Happy!  This fun interactive children’s book helps children explore feelings in every day social situations.  This is no ordinary board book.  I Feel Happy has a two-sided baby face attached to the book with a ribbon.  There is a little turning wheel that your child can spin to change the expression on the baby’s face on one side and the word for that expression on the other side!  The face fits into each page like a puzzle piece.

My toddler simply loves to make the face smile and yell, “happy!”

I Feel Happy is a wonderful book to introduce young children to the wonders of reading since the puzzle piece allows them to engage in the story with you.  This is is truly an asset when reading with active little children!  In I Feel Happy, you will come across phrases such as, “When I lose a toy, I feel…..”  Your child then gets to fill in the blank of the story by turning the wheel on the puzzle piece to the feeling that matches how he or she feels.  Since there can only be a few choices of feelings, you may have to choose the one that is most similar to what your child says.  I Feel Happy has also been a great tool for me to use with my 4-year-old in understanding how people’s facial expression portray what they may be feeling.  He is more introverted and keeps a lot of feelings to himself so this book has been fabulous at getting my little guy to open up.  Some children may simply love this book for the puzzle piece and others may love choosing the ending to each phrase.  The different features of this book make I Feel Happy a fun story that both my toddler and my pre-schooler can enjoy!
