I am so excited for the 4th of July this year that I am seeing stars. My boys have been eating star-shaped food for a week now and I can’t seem to stop myself! I will most likely share a few other recipes for star-shaped treats but I thought I would start with a classic……Rice Krispies treats. These treats are great for hot summer days because you don’t have to keep them refrigerated.
To feed my star addiction I decided to make patriotic star-shaped Rice Krispies treats.
Ingredients for 4th of July Rice Krispies Stars:
6 cups Rice Krispies cereal
3 Tablespoons butter
10 oz marshmallows
red & blue m&m’s
white chocolate or candy wafers (I used red vanilla flavored wafers)
Simply prepare your Rice Krispies treats according to the directions on your Rice Krispies box. You can usually find the recipe on the inside of the box. Once you have flattened out the rice Krispies treats into a pan using a buttered spatula, melt bought a package of star-shaped cookie cutters that contained 4 sizes and used the two middle-sized star cutters to cut out my Rice Krispies treats. Place the star-shaped treats onto wax paper.
Melt candy wafers or white chocolate and stir frequently to prevent burning. I used a small frosting spatula to drizzle the melted candy across the stars for a striped look. While the candy is still warm and soft, place m&m’s on top to be sure they will stick.
Allow a few minutes for the melted candy to dry and then store the stars in a container at room temperature. I made my stars out of two different sized cookie cutters so I would have smaller treats for the little kids. If you want to avoid sticky fingers you could also use a large star cookie cutter and place each star on a wooden stick. I plan on making these next time!
