September’s Pick: Freckleface Strawberry: Best Friends Forever Review & Giveaway

Since a new school year has begun, I thought it would be fun to feature the newest Frecklace Strawberry book by Julianne Moore. Many of you may be familiar with this author due to her more well-known success as an actress. However, in 2007 Moore created the lovable character Freckleface Strawberry. This adorable character was named after Moore’s childhood nickname, Freckleface Strawberry. Since she did not like this nickname, Julianne Moore created the character Freckleface Strawberry to provide reassurance and help teach children that it is okay to be different. This month’s pick, Freckleface Strawberry: Best Friends Forever, is Moore’s newest book and the 3rd Freckleface Strawberry story thus far. The captivating Freckleface Strawberry can even be brought to life for you and your child in Freckleface Strawberry The Musical.

Freckleface Strawberry: Best Friends Forever is cute story about a friendship between a little girl and boy. These two friends begin to question their friendship once other students at school repeatedly point out that it is only fun to play with kids of the same gender. This is a sweet story about children entering the world of social norms where boys should play with boys and girls should play with girls. This story shows your child that true friendship is not based on labels and appearances. My boys are not yet in school so the social relevance of Freckleface Strawberry: Best Friends Forever is lost on my son at this point. This book’s reading level targets children 4-8 years of age. However, my three-year old still asks me to read him this book quite often.

Moore does a wonderful job of using light-hearted humor to touch on real life issues children deal with while developing physically and socially. I think these books are great at helping build self-confidence and are a great lead in for you talk to your child about his or her social life at school as well self-image.
